The olive tree has been on Lake Como (Lario) since Roman times, brought here by the Greeks. It is mentioned also in the municipal statutes that, in the fourteenth century, documenting the spread of this crop. The ancient name of Olcio was Oleum, oil in Latin, reflecting the importance of this crop in this area. In a 16th century map Olcio is called "Oleum olei ferax": Oleum, abundant of olive oil.

In the following centuries the olive tree is being replaced by other crops: in the eighteenth century was introduced the cultivation of mulberry trees for the breeding of silkworms and in the nineteenth century it was decided to extend the vineyards. After the last world war takes an interest in this crop. Today it is estimated that about 40,000 olive trees cultivated in the provinces of Lake Como, with many centuries-old patriarchs. The oil of the lake is recognized as PDO Lombardy Lakes Lario and is the winner of numerous awards.
